Articles: LAKE 3 (Chubut) Heaven on Earth

by: Gonzalo Herrero

There are a few fishing destinations where you feel in Heaven and, from my modest point of view, Lake 3 in Rio Pico area, Province of Chubut, is certainly one of them.
There are several lakes close to Rio Pico, but Lake 3 and Lake 5 have proved to be the best ones, thanks to the catch-and-release policies and exclusive flyfishing.
Lake 3 is not a deep lake; it is quite shallow in fact. Its waters are greenish because of the great quantity of underwater vegetation.
The coast is quite accessible, with rush and large rocks, except the western coast which gives its back to the Andes(I think it is the western one)and is well protected, almost inaccessible on foot due to a huge mallin (typical plant in the area).
Strong gusts of wind coming from the Andes blow in the lake, which has an overpopulation of rainbow and brown trout with an average weight ranging from 6 to 11 pounds.
You can fish it from the shore, but I suggest fishing it from boat or belly boat which allows you to reach the spots behind the rush where larger trout feed. Besides, we have access to the western coast, which, as I said before, consists of a huge mallin and a wall of rush and offers the best fishing in the lake, according to my personal experience.
An interesting tip to keep in mind is to take a short rope with a rock tied to one end on the belly boat in order to anchor ourselves to the bottom when it is too windy. Otherwise, we end up exhausted after kicking the water for some time.
A close friend of mine who lives in Esquel recommended that I fish Lake 3 with black, brown and dark olive streamers on large hooks, such as Mustad 9672 or 79580, size #2 or #4. Woolly Bugger, Matuka and Rabbit are some of the patterns that have proved to give good results.
In general, if you float-fish the lake and it is not a normal day, that is to say windy, rods #5 or #6 will do, because you don´t need to make long casts. However, if it is windy or you are fishing from the shore, rods #7 or #8 are a better option. As you all know, it depends on the angler´s preferences.
When it comes to choosing the rod, you should consider that Lake 3 is home to big trout and a rod that is not appropriate would prolong the fight and reduce the chance of a good recovery after releasing the trout so that another angler can enjoy it in the future.
Sinking lines are the best option. Moderate sinking is the most suitable in this lake, for example shootings Type 2 Scientific Anglers.
Another tip to take into account is the fact that the "monsters" usually strike at sunset, when the sun is hiding and the night is gaining ground.
Finally, I suggest using reels with a good brake system, if you don´t want unexpected cuts of the line.
