Trip Overview

The Lodge is one of Alaska's oldest, and renowned fishing lodges. It offers exceptional fishing for trophy rainbow trout, all five species of Pacific salmon; king, chum, silver, pink and sockeye. It is located on the banks of the Nuyakuk River in the middle of the Wood River-Tikchik State Park in Alaska. As a "grandfathered" operation in the state park, the Lodge offers uncrowded fishing on some of Alaska's premier waters and, on two drainages, is one of only two lodges that can fish a particular stretch of river. The Wood River-Tikchik region of Alaska is renowned for its salmon runs as well as its robust populations of Rainbow trout, Char, Grayling, and Pike. Truly, it is the type of fishery where anglers of all skills will catch plenty of fish and will have the opportunity to catch trophy rainbow trout as well as all five species of Pacific Salmon on both fly-tackle and conventional tackle.
The Chinook or King Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) is the largest--and least abundant--of Pacific salmon. Alaska King Salmon fishing is exciting because of the two to three years at sea and average about 24 pounds each. The King is by far one of the hardest fighting fish that you will catch in freshwater, 45 minute battles are not uncommon. The angler numbers are limited to 4 per day during the King Salmon season, which goes from June to August.

Package

The Lodge has the distinct advantage of being a small operation located right on the river. Every evening the staff gathers with the guests and go over the plans for the next day. With nearly 20 boats scattered throughout the region, and many rivers where you do not need a boat, you will have an amazing number of fisheries to choose from everyday. The guides need to know what species you would like to focus on for the day, and if there is a particular river that you would like to fish, and they will help pick the best fishery for you. Each day begins with a hearty breakfast an hour after your breakfast you will depart for the fishing. The guides will pack a picnic lunch. The daily fishing schedule departure times are flexible to maximize your fishing success. Pickup time will vary depending on the groups desired plans for the day. You can always fish in front of the lodge. Dinner time will be between 7 and 8 pm and all the anglers will return to the lodge one hour prior to dinner, so you'll have time to shower, relax and enjoy hors d'oeuvres. On the Sunday exchange days, you will usually get some fishing time in (usually unguided).

Accommodation

Up to 12 anglers. Four finely furnished guest cottages each with living rooms, one and two bedrooms, and private baths. There are also two well appointed bedrooms in the main lodge. Each cabin or room has modern bath facilities, independent heat, excellent beds, and all the creature comforts of home, along with spectacular views of the river, the rapids, and the snowcapped peaks.
The Lodge prides itself on the quality and abundance of the food that is available to its guests. Freshly baked bread, rolls, and pastries are served at each lodge meal. Fresh fruit and vegetables are always available. Dinner menus vary but typically include New York steak, turkey, prime rib, Halibut, a variety of Alaskan seafood, and similar items. Lunches are prepared by the lodge kitchen staff and are often times supplemented by fresh fish cooked on the stream bank. Homemade soups, breads, pastries, and desserts are the specialties of the house. Snacks are always available and we serve appetizers each evening. You won't find better food at any fishing lodge in Alaska.

Tackle and Flies

Fishing equipment and clothing vary greatly from week to week. You will use a 4-6 weight fly rod for the non salmon species. The lodge also has backup fly rods available for guest use, if you happen to break a rod while you are at the lodge.

At the Lodge the salmon are always available (except for the first weeks, and last week of the season). A 7- 9 weight rod is the ideal. We suggest a 10 weight for the Kings. We suggest floating lines, but occasionally sinking lines, and sink tips can be effective, especially for the Kings.

Flies are included in the package. Spinning gear is not included, if you are a spin fisherman please notify us and we can tell you what is available at the lodge. There is a Fly tying table available for your personal use at the Lodge.
