Itatí is one of the localities in the North of Argentina, downstream of the Yacyreta dam, which are part of the so-called Alto Parane where the clarity of the water, extensive sandbanks and coasts with good structure, allow excellent fishing of dorados, pira pita and pacu. The dorados in this part of the river can reach surprising sizes, it is not uncommon to catch dorados over 20 pounds to be achieved, sometimes doubling that size. The clarity of the water and the fantastic surroundings, as well as the size of the dorados, make Alto Parana an ideal destination for all fly fishing lovers.

Tackle and Flies

The structure of the river allows fishing between the fallen trees and sticks, in the veriles, sandbanks and areas with a stone bottom using different techniques that go from shooting and lifting to dead drift. For dorado it is recommended to use # 8 rod 9 foot with WF tropical line, leader no less than 7 feet with 40 pound steel shock tippet. In certain areas the use of a Full Intermediate or Sinking Tip line may be convenient. The dorado take Deceiver or Andino flies, 8 to 10 inches long somewhat weighted and with different colors (black, black and red, black and yellow, chartreuse, violet, etc.) tied in hook # 3/0, also the use of large Hoppers and mice pattern can give good results. For pira pita fishing, up to a # 6 rod can be used with typical dorado flies but somewhat smaller. For pacu we recommend # 8 rod with WF line, 9 foot monofilament leader and a short 40 pound steel shock tippet, the flies that do very well are the colored "coquitos" with a strong # 2/0 hook.

Fishing report

The Alto Paraná in its ideal condition!
We started October with the right foot, optimal conditions of the Paraná River, which continues low and with very clear waters. Clarification: the downspout of the river does not affect the different sections of the Paraná in the same way. It is important to note that we will always prefer the lower river in the Alto Parana section since it is to be assumed that the stone structures that hide the large Dorados will be within reach of our flies and that the waters will remain clear.
The windy weather conditions and the somewhat cold weather suggested that the fishing would be a little tougher than normal.
The trophy of the week was won by a Dorado captured on the coast of sticks, with a waterline and a black streamer upstream from the Lodge, leading Diego Anonnis.

Lots of activity and great catches during different hours of the day will leave you in the memory of this beginning of the season.
